bike race: new york city

i was commissioned by marie foulston to make a game for the legendary no quarter event in nyc in 2025.

i was a little burnt out after finishing despelote but was very excited to make a small game for an event i loved so much. i had an idea a few years ago to make a game where you bike in actual nyc using google maps 3d tile data. i 3d scanned a bunch of my friends and made them playable characters (with help from jie en lee). the way the game works is that you are dropped into a random place in nyc and compete to arrive at some destination, with help of onlookers who can get real world directions on their phones.

this is the description of the game i wrote for the show:

i moved to nyc 10 years ago. 2 weeks after moving i bought my bike. i ride it almost every day. it is my favorite thing to do here.

i tend to be very late to things and i always think i can catchup on time by biking faster. this is a game about that.

special thanks to: gabe cuzzillo, jie en lee, hana mastrogiacomo, kenny sun, uti azulay, kas ghobadi, jamie olesker, flan falacci, rick gillis, easton self-chuan, kai self-chuan, isabella hidalgo naged

gabe convinced me like a week before the show to try to use an actual citibike as a controller, which was my first time properly working with alt controller stuff. it was a crazy proposal to setup in such short notice but thankfully he helped so much to wrap up the final build and really he made it all possible.

i was pretty happy with how it all turned out, except that the bike controllers kept breaking in weird ways every 15 minutes during the show. i'd love to take this further and work on making it all a little more stable, but i need somewhere cool to show it. if u happen to have some place cool to show it and want commission me to set it up there please lmk!

also, i liked this article that was written about the game:
